Attractive display banners on other dating sites could be very effective. Imagine a gadget ad on a site like eharmony, okcupid, or jdate, that links the user to your site and asks for a signup.

You’re very right, you definitely don’t start with NO people. But how does one get enough people to begin with?
Kind of like what came first, the chicken or the egg sort of thing.
This means you have to get creative. Perhaps you get a bunch of friends to create profiles on the site to give it some oompf?
Or, I guess you could hire a team in India to create a bunch of active profiles, but that wouldn’t be very engaging for anyone who would come and try to actually use the site, would it?
Perhaps you buy advertising and banner space that links people to a landing page that requires sign up info. and a “special invite” to be the first 1,000 users and give them something in exchange for being the first, some sort of incentive to go through the sign up process (since you won’t have technically made the site live yet) and then when you get 1k people registered you send out an email reminder about the site and have them all check out the live version.
Just a few ideas, hope that helps get the creativity flowing!
